Magnus Chase NON-SPOILER Review!!!!

Hi Bookish People!

Welcome to the Picnic!!! Today I come bearing a book review and a good one indeed! Today I will be reviewing, Magnus Chase & The Sword of Summer! This is the first book in Rick Riordan's new series Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard! Not only this, but I will be writing this review in the new and improved format!!! Also, I was kind of meant to write a review of Cress for today but that will be posted on Friday because I have to get this out of me!

Ok so let's just set the scene it's 9:10pm on a Friday night and I am starting on Chapter 60 in this beautiful Book. Ok, so I may be a little obsessed but I powered through this book to finish it at 10:45pm. I loved it! Now I am writing this review the morning after and metaphorically crying because the second book isn't coming out until forever!!! It took me a week to finish this book!

Anyway here is the blurb whilst I get my act together for this review!

Title: Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer
Author: Rick Riordan
Genres: Fantasy
Published: 6th of October 2015
Publisher: Disney Hyperion Books
Page Count: 528
Format: Finished Copy
Purchased from: K-mart
Buy it: Here! or Here! or Compare Prices and Formats: Here!
Goodreads: Here!
Rick's links are here!

My Age Recommendation: 12 & Up
Gift? Yes!

I rated this book a 5 out of 5 Stars on Goodreads:

The very blurb that made me begin this book....... Anyway enough fangirling let's get into the blurb details, hope you're enjoying the lemonade!

This story had so many different components to it! It was so diverse and intriguing! The book is based around Norse Mythology and set in Boston! If you are nervous about not understanding this mythology, there's no need to be! I read this book without knowing anything about Norse Mythology and I loved it! Rick explains all the connections so simply and the God's so beautifully! It's detailed and it's just so easy to understand I came out of this book understanding every different God without even having to research them! I also loved all of the challenges Magnus had to do and loved how they tangled in the God's lives!

Did I want more? YES!!! Would I eat it/read this plot again? YES!!! Was Rick's idea store bought or homemade? Definitely Homemade! It would've taken a lot of research to come up with the challenges Magnus had to do and it was like nothing I've ever read before!

Magnus Chase: Magnus is like a mud chocolate cake with salty caramel icing and sprinkles. He is dangerous and salty sarcastic but I feel like he is a bit of a softie too hence the sprinkles. Magnus was so interesting, listening to his thought process and sarcastic comments made me love him so much more! Plenty icing!!! Of course the sarcasm and his awareness and devotion to his friends made those sprinkles taste that much better!

Samirah: Sam is like Red Velvet with cinnamon icing! Sam is one of Magnus's close friends. On the outside she seems bad-ass pretty but when you take a bite she is gooey in the middle. The cinnamon icing represents the secrets she hides. You can't see them but soon you'll be able to taste them! The icing held many secrets and was sufficient and I'm pretty sure I saw a sprinkle on top of their even if Sam would try and hide it!

Evil Gang: The Evil Gang would be a Chilli Cupcake with Jalapeño Icing! Evil, Evil, Evil! Trying to take down Magnus! I hated these characters! Their stories were interesting and tips to Rick for making me hate these people so much!!! Zero sprinkles because there wasn't one ounce of kind in their blood and too much Jalapeño icing for my liking!

  • Rick's Sense of Humour is amazing and makes the read that much more enjoyable!
  • Rick's Descriptions of the senses and settings are incredible and you to really see in your mind the places Magnus goes and what he feels.
  • The Chapter Titles are genius!
  • The way the God's are described!
  • Chapters a great length!
  • Please let me go to Valhalla and be a Valkyrie!

  • I have got no improvement comments to make!

A mystical read filled with adventure, fun, mythology and fantasy, you won't be able to put the book down! A must-have!

Thanks guys! I hope you enjoyed the review and my new format!!! Look out for ANOTHER review of Cress by Marissa Meyer on Friday!

Cozy Time Book Tag!!!

Hi Bookish People!

Welcome to the Picnic! Today I will be doing the Cozy Time Book Tag! In Australia, it is now spring and I am missing Autumn so bad! So I have decided to do this tag without being tagged! At the end of this Picnic I will have the people I will be tagging!!

-Crunching Leaves: The world is full of color - choose a book that had reds/oranges/yellows on the cover.

For this I choose: Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan! I am currently reading this book (I have been updating everyone on my status on Goodreads!!!) I am enjoying this book so much!

- Cozy Sweater - It's finally cool enough to don warm cozy clothing: what book gives you the warm fuzzies?

Girl Online by Zoe Sugg! Love this Modern and Contemporary read! Perfect to snuggle up with on those cold days!

- Fall Storm: The wind is howling & the rain is pounding - choose your favorite book OR genre that you like to read on a stormy day

-I would definitely grab for a good ol' contemporary something like Dumplin'! Or maybe something with Greek Mythology....

Cool Crisp Air: What's the coolest character you'd want to trade places with?
-Magnus from Magnus Chase & The Sword of Summer! Can you even imagine being Magnus for a day? How much adventure & fun!!! Plus hanging out with Blitz, Hearth & Sam!

- Hot Apple Cider: What under hyped book do you want to see become the next biggest, hottest thing?

Nona & Me by Clare Atkins or Apple & Rain by Sarah Crossan!!!

- Coat, Scarves, and Mittens - The weather has turned cold & it's time to cover up - What's the most embarrassing book cover you own that you like to keep hidden in public?

I seriously can't answer this because I love all my book covers! But, If I could choose a book I would prefer in Hard Cover, then I would choose Red Queen because I love that hardcover!

- Pumpkin Spice: What's your favorite Fall time comfort/foods?

Hot Chocolates, Churros, Molten Chocolate Pudding, Monte Carlo Biscuits & Hot Jam Donuts. Wow, Julia you love your food!

- Warm, Cozy Bonfire: Spread the cozy warmth - Who do you tag?

Guest Post with Mindy McGinnis!!!!

Hello Bibliophiles!

Welcome to the Picnic! Today we have a Guest! Mindy McGinnis author of the Not A Drop to Drink Series & A Madness So Discreet which you can purchase here or here!

Mindy McGinnis

Mindy's Bio:
(Bio from Mindy's Website which you should go and check out:

Mindy McGinnis is an assistant YA librarian who lives in Ohio and cans her own food. She graduated from Otterbein University magna cum laude with a BA in English Literature and Religion. Mindy has a pond in her back yard but has never shot anyone, as her morals tend to cloud her vision.

I've asked Mindy a few questions below and I hope you enjoy!

1. Where did your inspiration to write 'A Madness So Discreet' come from? I've always been interested in the history of mental health, and the idea sprung up while I was reading about the history of lobotomies. I've also always wanted to write a historical, and am fascinated by the beginnings of criminal profiling, so I was able to come up with a storyline that utilized all of these aspects.

2. What do you prefer to read e-book, paperback or hardcover? Something physical.

3. If you could take Lynn Not A Drop to Drink, Lucy from In a Handful of Dust & Grace Mae from A Madness so Discreet out for the day, what would you feed each one & what would you do?

Lucy and Lynn wouldn't care - they'd just be happy to eat. Grace I'd feed something light, like cucumber sandwiches. I think we'd go ride roller coasters, b/c they all need some fun in their lives

4.  What inspired you create the futuristic setting for your two books Not A Drop to Drink &  In a Handful of Dust?

I watched a documentary called Blue Gold, which is about a projected shortage of potable water on our planet due to overpopulation. It was a horrible thought --- we all need water to survive, and it's something we can't make. I went to bed very grateful for the small pond in my backyard, and that night I dreamt I was teaching a young girl how to operate a rifle so that she could help me protect the pond. I woke up and thought, "Hey... I wrote a book in my head just now."

5. If you could take all of your characters for a holiday wherever in the world you wanted where would you take them?

I'm not sure if would be safe to take all of my characters to the same place, ever.

6. If Grace from A Madness So Discreet were hired at a fast food  restaurant what one would it be and why?

Subway. I don't think she could handle grease fryers.

7. We love the covers of your books. How do you come to deciding what the cover will look like?

Authors usually don't have input on their covers, but I haven't needed to because they've all been fantastic. My designer at Harper is Erin Fitzsimmons.

8.  If you could only take one character to England to eat their famous Fish & Chips on the beach who would it be/enjoy it the most?

Dr. Thornhollow. I also wouldn't mind being alone with him.

9. If one of your characters could start a blog & Youtube Channel who would it be & why?

Lynn would start a survivalist tips show, because she would find most people woefully unprepared.

10. Where do you like to curl up and read, what time of day & what do you eat/drink whilst reading?

I read before bed, and because of this there's not eating or drinking involved.

That's it for now Picnickers! A huge thanks to Mindy for stopping by, and spending her time answering these questions! Follow her on social media Here!

NON-SPOILER Review of Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Hello Bibliophiles,

Welcome to the Picnic! I have come to you today with a new review. This review is on Scarlet by Marissa Meyer, Book 2 in the Lunar Chronicles Series. Now before I jump into my review, I just want to point out a few things. Firstly, If you don't know what the Lunar Chronicles is, best not to read this review, start with my review on Cinder which I will link here. Basically, it is a series of books based around a cyborg girl who has to save the futuristic world from the turmoil that lyes on a planet called Luna. Luna is ruled by Evil Queen Levana who plans on overtaking the world. Secondly, at the end of this review I will be letting you know about a few more things to do with my blog and how it's changing!

Without further ado let's get into it!

To start off with here is the blurb of this novel:

Cinder returns in the second thrilling installment of the New York Times-bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.
Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother and the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she has no choice but to trust him, though he clearly has a few dark secrets of his own.
As Scarlet and Wolf work to unravel one mystery, they find another when they cross paths with Cinder. Together, they must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen who will do anything to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner.
Intriguing! As usual my reviews start with the world! Scarlet's story is based in the Futuristic French Country Side. The homestead is described in detail and you could clearly get a sense for where Scarlet lived. Cinder and her story in New Beijing is also described vividly.
Characters: I will briefly describe these characters as I don't want to spoil anything!
Scarlet- Scarlet is one of the main characters in this book (hence the name.) She is a fiery and sassy character desperate to find her Grandmother and return to her normal life with her. She is one of those characters that you can love and hate at the same time and I feel like this was what Marissa was aiming for. Although she is stubborn, Scarlet can pull on a brave face even when she is scared and is a won't-take-no-for-an-answer kind of girl. She is definitely a strong and powerful girl (which I love!!!)
Wolf- Mysterious and dark, Wolf is the perfect man to stroll into Scarlet's life. Involved in weekly fights, Wolf is scarred and bruised although intriguing and mysterious. Wolf has a deep and dark past that Scarlet must uncover.
Cinder: Find my character description of Cinder here. Cinder proves in Scarlet that she is worthy of conquering the world, cyborg or not, she can make a difference. Cinder is an inspiring female protagonist, I adore her sarcasm and it makes me laugh out loud! Whenever she has a victory, you celebrate too. Cinder is also a relative hero, with many doubts about whether she can do it and whether people will judge her (being a cyborg.)  This makes her relatable and enjoyable to read about.
Thorne: Cinder's super arrogant accomplice! (This character spoils a bit of the story!)
Plot & Style of Writing: I adored Marissa's writing in this novel! Gutsy and detailed. I loved how she flicked from Scarlet's perspective, to Wolf's or Cinder's seamlessly and at the right times it added so much diversity to the story and plot. I enjoyed the plot immensely! I am intrigued immediately when a loved one is abducted and there is a strong girl character trying to chase down the villains. I especially love how all of the characters are tied together in some way, it adds to the story and I just LOVED it.
Brownie Point of the day: Most chapters ended in a cliff hanger (I love cliff hangers), which I enjoyed!
Improvements: None!
Overall I rated this book a 5/5 Stars on my Goodreads! Which you can go and visit and follow me (if you'd like to) HERE! I rate all of my books on Goodreads before I post reviews and I will also let you know on there about when the review will come out (HEAD STARTS MUCH)
Pay Marissa or The Lunar Chronicles Site A Visit:
I think that all ages 13 & Up would enjoy this book.
Buy online or at a bookshop! (I borrowed from Bookstore but hope to purchase soon)
Where to Read: Bed
Gift? Yes.
Product to go with Cover: A Cape for Halloween!
Thanks guys and I hope you enjoyed! I just finished Cress so a review will come up next Monday for that. This Friday I will have an Updates & Haul Tag for you guys! Currently reading: Dumplin' By Julie Murphy!
